The Detroit Red Wings wrap up their four-game western road trip Monday night in Edmonton, facing the Oilers at Rogers Place at 9:30 p.m. Eastern. The game airs on Detroit SportsNet (streaming on Fubo) and on Sportsnet in Canada.
Detroit (4-4-3, 11 points) is 1-1-1 on the trip after Saturday’s 4-1 loss in Calgary, which ended a six-game point streak and was the team’s first regulation loss since Oct. 9. The Red Wings sit tied with Buffalo for last place in the Atlantic Division. They return home Thursday against Chicago.
Edmonton (8-2-1) is coming off a 7-2 home loss to Toronto on Saturday that snapped a three-game winning streak. Connor McDavid leads the NHL with 33 points in 11 games and carries an 11-game point streak into Monday. Leon Draisaitl (23 points) and Evan Bouchard (21) give the Oilers three 20-point players already. Edmonton leads the league at 4.36 goals per game but ranks 27th in goals allowed at 3.55.
Goalies and injuries
Neither team had named a starter by Monday morning. John Gibson returned in Calgary two days after leaving the Vancouver game with an upper-body injury; he is 3-4-0 with a 3.44 goals-against average and an .867 save percentage. The Hockey Writers listed Daniil Tarasov as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. Forwards Marco Kasper (upper body) and Mason Appleton remain on injured reserve.
Edmonton is without goaltender Devon Levi, who went on injured reserve Oct. 23, so Tristan Jarry is expected to carry the load, with Matt Tomkins recalled from Bakersfield as the backup. Defenseman Mattias Ekholm is out with a concussion, according to The Hockey Writers, while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is back after missing the first nine games.
Storylines
Alex DeBrincat leads Detroit with six goals, and Detroit has outscored opponents 8-1 with his line with Emmitt Finnie and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard on the ice. Lucas Raymond (three goals, six assists) and former Oiler Viktor Arvidsson (four goals, four assists) both snapped scoring slumps earlier on the trip. Dylan Larkin, still at the center of trade talk, has one goal this season.
History favors the home side. Edmonton is 6-1-2 in its last nine games against Detroit and 4-0-2 in its last six home meetings. The teams split last season’s series, with the Oilers winning 4-1 at Rogers Place on Dec. 11.
