Flint Firebirds goaltender Trenten Bennett was named the OHL’s Goaltender of the Week on Monday, Oct. 26, after winning both of his starts in Flint’s three-games-in-three-days weekend. It is the first league-wide OHL weekly award for a Firebirds player this season.
The overage netminder went 2-0 for the week of Oct. 19-25 with a 1.44 goals-against average and a .955 save percentage. He opened the weekend on Friday by making 35 saves in a 4-3 shootout win over the Saginaw Spirit, his first victory as a Firebird. On Sunday afternoon he stopped all 29 shots he faced in a 1-0 shutout of the Soo Greyhounds at the Dort Financial Center, with Jimmy Lombardi’s first-period power-play goal standing as the only scoring of the game. Mason Courville started Saturday’s 6-2 win over Saginaw in between.
Bennett is 2-0-1-0 this season. His .938 save percentage ranks second in the OHL, and his 1.94 goals-against average ranks third.
The sweep of the weekend left Flint at 9-2-1-0 with points in eight straight games. The Firebirds play three more times this week: at the Kitchener Rangers on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m., at home against the Barrie Colts on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m., and at Sarnia on Sunday.
