Daniil Tarasov was back on the ice with the Red Wings on Wednesday, practicing at home for the first time since an undisclosed injury knocked him out of the lineup after Detroit’s Oct. 20 game against Seattle. MLive’s Ansar Khan reported his return, and the Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James wrote that it “sounds like” Tarasov is OK. The team has not announced a change to his status or said whether he is available for Thursday’s home game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Tarasov had been one of the bright spots of Detroit’s first two weeks. In four appearances, three of them starts, he is 1-0-2 with a 1.40 goals-against average, a .940 save percentage, and a shutout.
A crowded crease
His absence opened the door for Michal Postava, whom the Red Wings recalled from Grand Rapids under emergency conditions on Oct. 22. Postava, 24, stopped seven of eight shots in relief at Vancouver that night, then made 25 saves and went 3-for-3 in the shootout in his first NHL start Monday in Edmonton, a 4-3 win that closed the road trip.
With Tarasov healthy, Detroit has three goalies on hand alongside John Gibson, and an emergency recall ends once the injured goalie can play. St. James expects Postava to be reassigned to the Griffins, though the Red Wings have not announced a move. Coach Todd McLellan sat Gibson in favor of Postava on Monday.
What’s next
The Red Wings (5-4-3) open a two-game homestand against the Blackhawks at 7 p.m. Thursday at Little Caesars Arena, then host the St. Louis Blues in a 1 p.m. matinee Saturday.
