A freshman goalie who refused to break in Durham, a captain who hit a franchise milestone in style, and an overage netminder who turned in the best week in the OHL headline Mitten Hockey’s Three Stars for Oct. 19-25.
First star: Joshua Ravensbergen, Michigan State
The line: 2 games, 71 saves on 73 shots, .973 save percentage, 1-1-0.
No one on the 15 teams Mitten Hockey follows did more for his team last week. Ravensbergen made 33 saves in Friday’s opener at New Hampshire, a 1-0 game that hung on a single goal. He came back Saturday with a career-high 38 saves in a 2-1 win that salvaged the split, giving up only a power-play goal midway through the third period.
What stands out is the workload. Seventy-three shots in two nights is a lot to ask of any goalie, let alone a freshman on the road. The San Jose Sharks took Ravensbergen 30th overall in 2025, and weekends like this one show why. He had already been named one of the Big Ten’s Three Stars earlier in the week, and he followed it with something better. (Series wrap)
Second star: Dominik Shine, Grand Rapids Griffins
The line (Oct. 24 vs. Cleveland): 3 goals, including an empty-netter, in a 5-2 win.
Shine walked into Van Andel Arena on Saturday needing three goals to reach 100 as a Griffin, and he got all three in one night. He opened the scoring 3:35 into the game, made it 2-0 just 1:13 into the second period, and finished the hat trick into an empty net at 16:55 of the third to reach the milestone.
Doing it in one game is a fitting way for the captain to get there. Shine is in his 11th season with Grand Rapids and his second wearing the “C,” and the Griffins’ game notes had him third in franchise history in regular-season goals before the hat trick. He is the heartbeat of a team that left the weekend at 7-1-1-1. (Series wrap)
Watch: Postgame interviews, Griffins vs. Monsters, Oct. 24 (Grand Rapids Griffins)
Third star: Trenten Bennett, Flint Firebirds
The line: 2-0, 1.44 goals-against average, .955 save percentage, one shutout.
The OHL agreed with this one: Bennett was named the league’s Goaltender of the Week. Flint’s overage netminder started the three-in-three weekend by making 35 saves in a 4-3 shootout win in Saginaw on Friday, his first victory as a Firebird. On Sunday he stopped all 29 shots in a 1-0 shutout of the Soo Greyhounds, the kind of game where one mistake decides it and he made none.
Bennett’s .938 save percentage ranked second in the OHL and his 1.94 goals-against average ranked third as of the league’s weekly honors, and Flint has points in eight straight games with him as a big reason why.
Honorable mention
Alex DeBrincat, Red Wings: A goal and an assist in Seattle on Oct. 20, and the goal was a big one. His tying score with 17 seconds left in regulation was the 300th of his career, reached in 705 games, making him the fourth-fastest active American player to the mark.
