Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman said Monday on the FAN Hockey Show that trade talks involving unsigned Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson are “really picking up,” with a lot of interest from around the league and Detroit asking a fairly high price. The report is unconfirmed: the Red Wings have not announced a trade or a new contract, and they have not commented on the talks.
Friedman’s update, as summarized by The Hockey News, came a day after he told the NHL on TNT pregame show on Sunday that interim general manager Shawn Horcoff was calling around the league, though he wasn’t sure whether those calls were about Edvinsson or Dylan Larkin. In both cases, he said, Detroit has been asking about young centers, whether they are already in the NHL or still developing as prospects.
The report marks a shift in tone from earlier in the month. Horcoff said on Oct. 14 that the Red Wings had no interest in trading Edvinsson, but Friedman reported as early as Oct. 7 that the defenseman would prefer a trade, and TSN’s Pierre LeBrun said last week that Detroit had talked with as many as 10 teams, naming San Jose and Boston. Mitten Hockey reported on Oct. 24 that Friedman said Detroit had been asking about young centers in talks on both Edvinsson and Larkin.
Edvinsson, 23, was the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. He is the last unsigned restricted free agent in the league after his entry-level contract expired, and the Red Wings placed him on the injured non-roster list while the standoff continues. Under NHL rules, he must sign a contract by Dec. 1 or he cannot play in the NHL this season, which puts a clock on any deal, whether it is a new contract in Detroit or a sign-and-trade elsewhere.
The Red Wings (5-4-3) open a two-game homestand Thursday against the Chicago Blackhawks at Little Caesars Arena, then host the St. Louis Blues on Saturday afternoon.
