The Muskegon Lumberjacks scored three times in the third period to beat the U.S. National Team Development Program’s Under-17 team 5-1 on Wednesday night at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth. Lars Hutson had three assists, and Louis Jonerheim and Drew Fox each had a goal and an assist for Muskegon.
How it happened
Jonerheim opened the scoring on the power play in the first period, and Fox added a second goal before the intermission. The NTDP generated early chances but couldn’t solve Lumberjacks goalie Samuel Doyon-Cataquiz, who stopped Joey Cullen on a breakaway.
Teddy Lechner made it 3-0 early in the third. RJ Thompson, a recent Michigan commit, answered with his first NTDP goal to make it 3-1, but newly acquired Joshua Toll restored the three-goal lead, and Trey Wilson scored on the power play in the final second of regulation. All three Muskegon third-period goals were the scorers’ first of the season.
In goal
Doyon-Cataquiz made 21 saves for his third win of the season. The NTDP split its net, with Colby Arnold making 21 saves before Mason Martin took over and stopped 17 shots.
Hutson now has seven assists this season, and Jonerheim has 10 points.
What’s next
The game wrapped up a stretch of nine games for the U17s against NAHL and USHL opponents. They now head to Oakville, Ontario, for the U17 World Hockey Challenge, starting with a pre-tournament game against Canada White on Friday.
