Mason Hriczov made 35 saves for his first career OHL shutout, and the Kitchener Rangers beat the Flint Firebirds 3-0 on Friday night at Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. The loss ended Flint’s eight-game point streak, the longest active run in the OHL, and was the Firebirds’ first regulation loss since Oct. 3 and the first time they have been shut out this season.

How it happened

Cameron Arquette scored the only goal Kitchener needed at 5:24 of the first period, from Weston Cameron and Alex Forrest. Alexander Bilecki made it 2-0 at 14:32 of the second, set up by Luca Santala, and Arquette added an empty-net goal in the final minute for his ninth of the season.

Flint outshot the Rangers 35-30, including 13-11 in the third period, but went 0-for-4 on the power play. Kitchener went 0-for-2. Trenten Bennett, named OHL Goaltender of the Week on Monday, made 27 saves on 29 shots and was the game’s third star. He has made at least 25 saves in each of his four starts.

What’s next

The Firebirds (9-3-1-0) host the Barrie Colts at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dort Financial Center for Hockey Scares Cancer night, then visit Sarnia on Sunday afternoon. Kitchener improved to 8-5-2-1 and extended its point streak to six games.
