Josh Bonnyman scored twice, Carter Beauchesne set up three goals, and the Flint Firebirds beat the Sarnia Sting 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Progressive Auto Sales Arena. Flint (11-3-1-0) closed a three-games-in-three-days weekend with its eighth win in its last 10 games, while Sarnia fell to 6-10-1-0.
How it happened
Brady Smith opened the scoring midway through the first period, cleaning up a loose puck after a scramble off a faceoff. The second period belonged to Flint’s top unit. Bonnyman one-timed a Beauchesne feed past Sarnia goalie Ivan Tkach-Tkachenko early in the frame, then beat him again on a rush with about five minutes left, again from Beauchesne. In the final seconds of the period, Charlie Murata finished another Beauchesne setup for his fifth goal of the season and a 4-0 lead.
Cameron Aucoin got Sarnia on the board early in the third, but Darian Anderson answered later in the period with his 10th goal of the season.
It was Bonnyman’s first multi-goal game in the OHL, and Beauchesne’s three assists were a career high. Trenten Bennett, the league’s goaltender of the week a week ago, stopped 14 of 15 shots as Flint limited Sarnia’s chances all afternoon.
What’s next
The Firebirds open a four-game homestand Friday, Nov. 6, against the Erie Otters at 7 p.m. at the Dort Financial Center, then host the Brampton Steelheads on Saturday, Nov. 7.
