Tyler Hopkins scored a power-play goal with 2:44 left and Joshua Avery added an empty-netter as the top-ranked Guelph Storm beat the Saginaw Spirit 5-3 on Saturday at the Dow Event Center. Saginaw tied the game twice in the third period, the second time on Blake Barnes’ first goal of the season, before Guelph pulled away late.
How it happened
Brody George gave Saginaw a 1-0 lead late in the first period, finishing a long pass from Levi Harper for the second point of his OHL career. Ryan Roobroeck took over in the second, scoring early from Grant Spada and again on the power play at 8:13, from Vladimir Dravecky, for his 13th and 14th goals of the season.
Brody Pepoy tied it about halfway through the third, deflecting a Ryan Hanrahan shot for his eighth goal. Illia Shybinskyi restored Guelph’s lead at 14:01, and Barnes answered from Jacob Cloutier to make it 3-3. Hopkins then scored at 17:16 from Roobroeck and Owen Griffin, and Avery, set up by Carter Stevens, sealed it into an empty net.
Brady Knowling made 27 saves for Saginaw. Zach Jovanovski stopped 27 of 30 for Guelph. Special teams decided it: the Storm went 2-for-3 on the power play, and the Spirit went 0-for-6. Roobroeck finished with two goals and an assist.
