Four of Michigan’s seven Division I teams are ranked in both national polls again this week, and three of them are in the top five. Michigan moves from first to second in the USCHO.com and USA Hockey polls released Nov. 2, with Wisconsin taking over at No. 1, while Michigan State climbs to third in both.
Where Michigan stands
Michigan (8-1-0) is No. 2 in both polls, down one from last week. The Wolverines still drew nine first-place votes from USCHO voters and four in the USA Hockey poll. Michigan has no game this weekend; its next game is Nov. 12. Recent coverage: Michigan series wrap at Ohio State (Oct. 31-Nov. 1).
Michigan State (5-1-0) is No. 3 in both polls, up one in each. The Spartans received three first-place votes from USCHO and one in the USA Hockey poll. They host Boston University at Munn Ice Arena on Nov. 6-7. Recent coverage: Michigan State vs. North Dakota recap (Oct. 31).
Western Michigan (6-1-0) is No. 5 in both polls, up one in USCHO and unchanged in the USA Hockey poll. The Broncos picked up one USCHO first-place vote. They open NCHC play at North Dakota on Nov. 6-7. Recent coverage: Western Michigan series wrap vs. LIU (Oct. 29-30).
Michigan Tech (6-2-0) is No. 14 in USCHO, down one, and No. 15 in the USA Hockey poll, unchanged. The Huskies were idle last weekend and host No. 8 (USCHO) Augustana at MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Nov. 6-7. Recent coverage: Michigan Tech series wrap at Ferris State (Oct. 23-24).
Also receiving votes
None. Northern Michigan, Ferris State, and Lake Superior State did not receive votes in either poll.
The top five
USCHO: 1. Wisconsin, 2. Michigan, 3. Michigan State, 4. Denver, and 5. Western Michigan.
NCAA NPI
The NPI is the ranking the NCAA uses to select and seed the 16-team NCAA tournament. These positions are from NCAA.com’s NPI page, listed as through games of Nov. 1. Three Michigan teams are inside the top 16. Last week’s figures came from a different source, so changes from week to week are not listed here.
- Michigan: No. 1 (inside the top 16)
- Michigan State: No. 8 (inside the top 16)
- Western Michigan: No. 12 (inside the top 16)
- Michigan Tech: No. 18
- Lake Superior State: No. 46
- Northern Michigan: No. 47
- Ferris State: No. 52
The NCAA page lists Michigan at 7-1-0, so its figures do not yet appear to include the Wolverines’ Nov. 1 game at Ohio State. Early-season NPI positions can move sharply while sample sizes are small.
