The Detroit Red Wings finish a back-to-back in Florida on Tuesday night when they visit the Tampa Bay Lightning at Benchmark International Arena. Puck drop is 7 p.m. ET, with the game on Detroit SportsNet and the Red Wings Radio Network.
Detroit (7-5-3, 17 points) arrives after a 5-3 win at Florida on Monday, when Carter Mazur scored his first NHL goal, and Justin Faulk and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard scored 45 seconds apart early in the third period. The Red Wings are 6-2-1 in their last nine games. Tampa Bay (8-3-2, 18 points) is one point ahead of Detroit in the Atlantic Division and is coming off a loss.
Lineup notes
Daniil Tarasov made 23 saves in his first start since Oct. 20 on Monday, so the second night of the back-to-back is the first test of how Todd McLellan splits the crease this week. Neither team had named a starter as of Tuesday morning.
Captain Dylan Larkin remains suspended without pay while the Red Wings try to trade him, and forwards Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton were still about two weeks from returning as of last Thursday. Forward John Leonard was recalled from Grand Rapids on Sunday ahead of the trip.
The storyline in Tampa
The Lightning are dealing with a star’s trade request of their own. Nikita Kucherov asked to be traded late last week, and general manager Julien BriseBois said the team has no intention of moving him. Kucherov told reporters Monday that the request was not about money, pointing to poor communication and respect from the front office. He is in the final season of an eight-year contract that pays $9.5 million a year and can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Coach Jon Cooper said over the weekend that Kucherov remains fully part of the team.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman has also linked Kucherov to Detroit as a possible fit; Mitten Hockey has a separate story on that report.
