The Detroit Red Wings made it official Thursday, recalling goaltender Michal Postava from the Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions and reassigning forward Sheldon Dries to Grand Rapids. Griffins coach Dan Watson had said Wednesday night that Postava was being called up to join the Red Wings on their Western road trip, which continues tonight in Vancouver.
To cover the Griffins’ crease, Detroit also moved goaltender Carter Gylander up from the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye to Grand Rapids. The Griffins released veteran goalie Jamie Phillips, who had signed a professional tryout on Wednesday to back up Trey Augustine against Manitoba.
Postava’s hot start
Postava, 24, is 4-0 with a 1.25 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage this season, tied for the AHL lead in wins. He was the AHL’s Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 11. As a rookie last season he went 17-6-0 with four shutouts, a 1.71 GAA, and a .937 save percentage, sharing the Hap Holmes Memorial Award with Sebastian Cossa for the league’s fewest goals allowed, and he started for Grand Rapids in the Calder Cup Playoffs.
Dries and Gylander
Dries, a 32-year-old Macomb native, played six games for the Red Wings this season after starting with four points in two AHL games. He had 23 goals and 45 points for Grand Rapids last season and has 133 NHL games over parts of seven seasons.
Gylander, 25, returns to Grand Rapids after going 7-0-1 with a 1.62 GAA and a .942 save percentage for the Griffins last season. He started this season in Toledo, where he helped the Walleye reach the 2025 Kelly Cup Finals.
The Griffins host the Cleveland Monsters on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at Van Andel Arena.
