The Detroit Red Wings reassigned goaltender Carter Gylander from the Grand Rapids Griffins to the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye on Thursday, and the Griffins assigned defenseman Jacob Truscott to Toledo as well. Gylander, 25, is a Red Wings seventh-round pick (191st overall in 2019) playing on a one-year, $850,000 contract this season.

The moves came the same day Detroit sent Michal Postava back to Grand Rapids, after Daniil Tarasov returned to the Red Wings, and recalled forward Sheldon Dries. Gylander had rejoined the Griffins when Postava was recalled on an emergency basis on Oct. 22. The team did not give a reason for either assignment.

Gylander’s short stay

Gylander made one appearance for the Griffins this season, stopping 24 shots in a 5-2 win over Cleveland on Oct. 24. It was the 50th win of his pro career and extended his point streak with Grand Rapids to 10 games (9-0-1), a run that dates to Dec. 7, 2024. In three AHL seasons he is 10-1-1 with a 2.14 goals-against average, a .926 save percentage, and one shutout. Last season he went 7-0-1 with a 1.62 GAA and .942 save percentage in eight games with Grand Rapids.

Most of his pro work has come in Toledo, where the Edmonton native is 40-19-10 with a 2.73 GAA, a .903 save percentage, and four shutouts in the regular season. He went 12-6 in the Kelly Cup Playoffs and helped the Walleye reach the 2025 Kelly Cup Final.

Truscott heads back to Toledo

Truscott, 24, a Port Huron native who played five seasons at the University of Michigan, had one assist and four penalty minutes in two games with the Griffins this season. The second-year pro spent most of last season in Toledo, with 23 points (four goals, 19 assists) and a plus-10 rating in 51 regular-season games, plus three points in 12 playoff games. He also played 12 games for Grand Rapids. Truscott was a fifth-round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in 2020.

What’s next

The Walleye (2-1-0-0) visit the Kalamazoo Wings at 7 p.m. Friday and the Fort Wayne Komets at 3 p.m. Saturday. Jonathan Lemieux started both of Toledo’s games last weekend, going 2-0 with a .921 save percentage in his Walleye debut. Toledo’s home opener is Nov. 7 against Fort Wayne at the Huntington Center.
