The Red Wings recalled forward Sheldon Dries from the Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions Thursday afternoon, adding a forward hours before their home game against the Chicago Blackhawks. In the same move, Detroit formally assigned goaltender Michal Postava to Grand Rapids, making official what coach Todd McLellan had said earlier in the day.
The recall comes with Dylan Larkin out of the lineup. McLellan said Thursday morning that Larkin would not play against Chicago, and Larkin’s camp has said he will sit out until he is traded. The team has not tied Dries’ recall to Larkin’s absence, and interim general manager Shawn Horcoff had not spoken publicly as of Thursday evening.
A familiar call-up
Dries, 32, is back for his second stint with Detroit this season. He has played six games for the Red Wings, with five shots, six blocked shots, and 19 hits while averaging 9:45 of ice time. In four games with the Griffins, he has five goals and eight points.
Dries has 26 points (16 goals, 10 assists) in 133 career NHL games with Colorado, Vancouver, and Detroit. Last season he had 45 points (23 goals, 22 assists) in 57 AHL games for Grand Rapids.
Postava heads back to Grand Rapids
Postava’s assignment follows Daniil Tarasov’s return from an undisclosed injury. Tarasov is set to back up John Gibson against Chicago. Postava, recalled Oct. 22, made his NHL debut in relief in Vancouver and earned a shootout win in his first start Monday in Edmonton.
Earlier: Red Wings send Michal Postava back to Griffins as Daniil Tarasov returns and Dylan Larkin will sit out until traded, agent says; Red Wings reportedly expected to suspend him.
