Goaltender Michal Postava is heading back to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Coach Todd McLellan confirmed Thursday that Postava will return to the AHL now that Daniil Tarasov is healthy, according to MLive’s Ansar Khan, as relayed by Detroit Sports Nation. Tarasov is set to back up John Gibson when the Red Wings host the Chicago Blackhawks at 7:30 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena. The team had not posted a formal reassignment as of Thursday afternoon.

The move was expected once Tarasov returned. He was back at practice Wednesday after missing about a week with an undisclosed injury, and Detroit Hockey Now noted Thursday morning that the Red Wings would have to send Postava down once Tarasov was cleared unless they chose to carry three goalies.

A short, memorable stay

Detroit recalled Postava from Grand Rapids under emergency conditions on Oct. 22. He made his NHL debut in relief that night in Vancouver, stopping seven of eight shots, and then got his first career start Monday in Edmonton, making 25 saves and turning aside all three Oilers shooters in a 4-3 shootout win.

The 24-year-old Czech, an undrafted free agent signed out of Kometa Brno, had opened the AHL season 4-0-0 with a 1.25 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage for the Griffins. Tarasov has a 1.40 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage in four appearances for Detroit this season.
