The San Jose Sharks have made at least one serious trade offer to the Red Wings for Simon Edvinsson, and Detroit did not accept it, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported in his 32 Thoughts column Friday. The report is unconfirmed, and the Red Wings have not announced any trade involving the unsigned defenseman.
Friedman described the talks between the clubs as “substantive” and said Detroit has not been unreasonable in its asks. The Red Wings want a young center as the centerpiece of any deal for Edvinsson, according to the report, and are prepared to wait until his Dec. 1 signing deadline if needed. Neither Friedman nor the outlets relaying his column said which Sharks players were part of the offer. Mitten Hockey first reported San Jose’s interest on Oct. 21, when the Sharks and Bruins surfaced in talks.
San Jose is not alone. Friedman also listed Boston, Nashville, St. Louis, and Seattle among the teams that have taken a long look at Edvinsson, according to San Jose Hockey Now. The Blues visit Little Caesars Arena for a 1 p.m. game against the Red Wings on Saturday.
Edvinsson, 23, is a restricted free agent whose entry-level contract expired after the 2025-26 season, and PuckPedia lists no new deal for him. The Red Wings placed him on the injured non-roster list in mid-October as the contract standoff continued. He must sign by Dec. 1 to be eligible to play in the NHL this season. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said again Thursday that Detroit’s intention is to sign him rather than trade him, while Edvinsson has said he would prefer a trade, Detroit Hockey Now reported.
The Edvinsson talks are running alongside the Red Wings’ effort to trade captain Dylan Larkin, who remains suspended without pay after saying he will not play again until he is moved. Mitten Hockey reported Saturday morning that Minnesota has made multiple offers for Larkin.
