The Utah Mammoth are monitoring suspended Red Wings center Dylan Larkin and could become more aggressive if Detroit lowers its asking price, Detroit Sports Nation reported Thursday night, citing league sources of The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun. The report is unconfirmed, and the Red Wings have not announced any deal or commented on talks with Utah.
Utah is one of the 10 teams on Larkin’s approved trade list, which means a deal there would not require him to waive his no-trade protection. The report does not describe an offer or any active negotiations, and it notes there is no sign that a trade is close. Hockey writer Lyle Richardson, in a rumor roundup Thursday, also described Utah GM Bill Armstrong as waiting for Detroit to soften its demands.
The standoff is now more than a week old. Larkin has not played since late October, when he said through his agent that he would sit out until traded, and the Red Wings suspended him without pay. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff has said the team will wait as long as necessary for the right return. Recent reports have described offers from Minnesota and Buffalo, and The Athletic reported this week that Detroit’s request to have Larkin expand his trade list was turned down.
If Utah does raise its bid, it would add another suitor from inside Larkin’s list at a time when Detroit has reportedly been unsatisfied with what those teams have offered. The Red Wings, 7-7-3 after Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Vegas, open a four-game road trip Saturday in Colorado.
