Steve Yzerman, the Hall of Fame former Red Wings captain and general manager, has joined a new National Teams Advisory Group that Hockey Canada announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Yzerman is one of five hockey executives and coaches in the group, along with Doug Armstrong, Brad Treliving, Shane Doan, and Bruce Cassidy.
The group will advise Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada’s vice-president of hockey operations, as the organization prepares for its biggest upcoming events, including the World Cup of Hockey, the IIHF World Championship, and the Olympics. TSN’s Darren Dreger, who first reported the role, said the group will also help identify future management teams and shape Hockey Canada’s overall planning.
Yzerman has a long history with Canada’s national program. He won Olympic gold as a player in 2002 and was the general manager of Canada’s gold-medal teams at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Dreger also reported that Treliving will work with the national junior team.
Yzerman spent his entire 22-season playing career in Detroit, two decades of it as captain, and won three Stanley Cups as a player. The Red Wings retired his No. 19 in 2007, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009.
