No. 5 Western Michigan opens its NCHC schedule on Friday with the first of two games at No. 10 North Dakota at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. North Dakota’s event listing has Friday’s puck drop at 7:07 p.m. Central (8:07 p.m. Eastern). The teams play again Saturday night.

The Broncos (6-1-0) finished their non-conference schedule by sweeping LIU at Lawson Ice Arena, 10-2 and 7-4, on Oct. 29-30. They are fifth in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey polls, and their only loss so far was a 3-2 decision at Michigan on Oct. 23. Western is 4-0-0 at home and 2-1-0 on the road.

The offense comes in hot. William Whitelaw scored four goals against LIU on Oct. 29, tying the NCHC single-game record, and defenseman Joona Väisänen added a hat trick in the same game. Zaccharya Wisdom scored twice in the second game of that series, and Adam Benák had a goal and two assists.

North Dakota, ranked 10th in both polls, is coming off a 5-3 loss to Michigan State in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game in Austin, Texas, on Oct. 31. The Fighting Hawks were eighth before that loss.

After this weekend, the Broncos come home to host Colorado College on Nov. 13-14.
