Trade talks between the Detroit Red Wings and Minnesota Wild on Dylan Larkin have hit a snag over the young center Minnesota wants to build its offer around, NHL insider Frank Seravalli said this week. Speaking on the Flames Now radio show Tuesday, in comments The Hockey News reported Wednesday night, Seravalli said Detroit has “balked a little bit about the quality of Danila Yurov” as a centerpiece. The report is unconfirmed, and the Red Wings have not commented on any talks or announced a trade.
Yurov, 22, was the Wild’s first-round pick, 24th overall, in 2022. He had 27 points in 73 games as an NHL rookie last season and has five points through 10 games this season. Per the report, the sides have not agreed on what the return should look like, with Detroit viewing Yurov more as a middle-six piece than the kind of headliner it wants for its former captain.
Why Minnesota matters
The Wild were one of the three teams Larkin named when his trade request became public in June, and The Hockey News described Minnesota as his preferred landing spot. Larkin holds a full no-trade clause, so he controls where he can go; his approved list now runs to 10 teams. He is in the fourth season of an eight-year, $69.6 million contract that carries an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31.
Detroit’s reported price has not moved much. TSN’s Darren Dreger and Pierre LeBrun have both described an ask built around two high-end prospects, an established top-nine forward, and a first-round pick.
Canadiens still lurking
LeBrun added Thursday, in a TSN video segment summarized by Detroit Sports Nation, that the Montreal Canadiens “remain interested” even though they are not on Larkin’s list. Daily Faceoff’s David Pagnotta reported last week that Montreal was ready to make a deal and was waiting on Larkin and his family rather than on price. Any trade to a team outside the list would need Larkin’s approval.
The reports land as the Red Wings play the second game of a four-game Western trip in Vancouver on Thursday night, with stops in Calgary and Edmonton to follow. Larkin had one goal and two assists in his first six games after being stripped of the captaincy before training camp.
