Red Wings interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Thursday that Detroit is prepared to wait as long as necessary to trade Dylan Larkin, and that it will not take a deal that fails to serve the organization as a whole. Horcoff spoke at a press conference in Detroit after the team suspended Larkin without pay, on the same day the Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 at Little Caesars Arena.
Asked whether the relationship could still be repaired, Horcoff made clear it could not. “Dylan no longer wants to be a Red Wing, and he’s not with us,” he said, as reported by NHL.com.
What Detroit wants back
Horcoff said the Red Wings want a return of players who can help the NHL team right away, without giving up on the club’s long-term plans. He said he is open to different combinations of NHL players, prospects, and draft picks if the package makes sense, according to Detroit Sports Nation.
He said Detroit has talked with teams on Larkin’s approved list and has also heard from clubs that are not on it, and he acknowledged that the list makes the remaining options difficult. He described the mood in the dressing room as raw and said the team has to weigh its other players, its coaches, and its fans in any deal.
The room moves on
Coach Todd McLellan said after the win that the team is moving on and that the situation had dragged on too long. Defenseman Moritz Seider said the victory meant a little more because of what the group had been through, and he hoped Larkin’s departure would cut down on distractions. Viktor Arvidsson scored three goals in the game. Recap: Red Wings Game Recap: vs. Blackhawks (Oct. 29).
Background
Larkin, 30, requested a trade in the summer and has a full no-trade clause, with 10 teams on his approved list. He is in the fourth season of an eight-year, $69.6 million contract with an $8.7 million cap hit. He has six points in 10 games this season and 649 points (278 goals, 371 assists) in 818 career games, 10th in franchise history. Detroit, which has missed the playoffs 10 straight seasons, has not hired a permanent head of hockey operations since Steve Yzerman was fired July 15. Unsigned restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson has also asked for a trade.
