The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 on Tuesday night at Benchmark International Arena, as Brayden Point scored twice in the first period and Detroit’s third-period push fell one goal short. The Red Wings, who had won 5-3 in Sunrise on Monday, finished their Florida back-to-back at 7-6-3. The Lightning improved to 9-3-2 and 7-0-0 at home.
Nikita Kucherov set up both of Point’s goals. The first came on the power play at 7:54 of the first period, when Kucherov slapped a pass across to Point, and the second followed at 13:01 on a one-timer. Anthony Cirelli made it 3-0 at 8:41 of the second, finishing a feed from Gage Goncalves with J.J. Moser also assisting.
Detroit answered less than two minutes later. J.T. Compher dropped the puck for Lucas Raymond and got it back before Raymond finished the play at 10:23 of the second. Compher then scored on the power play at 5:29 of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Red Wings couldn’t find the tying goal against Andrei Vasilevskiy, who finished with 19 saves. Ryan McDonagh hit the empty net with one second left.
John Gibson started in goal and allowed two goals on 13 shots before leaving after the first period with an injury. NHL.com described it as an upper-body injury, while the Detroit Free Press reported it as lower-body; the team had not announced his status by late Tuesday. Daniil Tarasov, a night after making 23 saves in Florida, stopped all 12 shots he faced in relief.
Compher finished with a goal and an assist. Detroit dressed the same skaters who won in Florida, with Nate Danielson and Jacob Bernard-Docker scratched. Point’s two goals were his first multigoal game of the season, and Kucherov’s two assists came a day after he spoke publicly about his trade request. Tampa Bay leads the season series 1-0, and the teams meet again Nov. 14.
The Red Wings return home to host the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena. The Lightning host Chicago on Thursday.
