Trevor Connelly broke a tie with 1:42 left in regulation, and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena. Anton Johansson scored Detroit’s only goal early in the third period, and Daniil Tarasov made 32 saves in his second straight start. The Red Wings fell to 7-7-3 with their second loss in a row, while Vegas improved to 11-5-2.
After two scoreless periods, Johansson put Detroit in front at 2:02 of the third. Sheldon Dries won an offensive-zone faceoff, Carter Mazur banked a shot off the end boards, and the rookie defenseman pinched down from the point and beat Carter Hart. Dries’ assist was his first point with Detroit and his first in the NHL since March 31, 2023, and Mazur also picked up an assist, giving him three points in his last three games.
The lead lasted 2:18. Braeden Bowman tied it at 4:20 with a high shot past Tarasov, and the game stayed level until late, when Connelly worked around Michael Rasmussen in the Detroit zone and snapped a low shot inside the post for the winner.
Tarasov stopped 32 of 34 shots, getting the start with John Gibson day-to-day and Michal Postava, recalled from Grand Rapids on Wednesday, as his backup. Hart made 25 saves on 26 shots for Vegas, which outshot Detroit 34-26. Neither team scored on the power play; the Red Wings came up empty on a pair of third-period chances. Detroit, which wore its Hometown Remix uniforms for the first time this season on Military Appreciation Night, has now lost four straight to Vegas and has scored two goals or fewer in three of Tarasov’s five starts.
The Red Wings were again without Dylan Larkin, who remains suspended while the team works toward a trade, along with forwards Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton and defenseman Albert Johansson. Detroit opens a four-game road trip Saturday at 9 p.m. in Colorado. Vegas continues its trip Sunday in Buffalo.
